APOTHEOSIS: Nelson

Nelson
god of change, freedom, hope, justice and luck
This post discusses one of the ten new gods that have ascended to divinity and formed a new pantheon, following the destruction of the Heresiarch at the end of SND-02: Fane of the Heresiarch. Click here to learn more about this process.

The Symbol
Lord Nelson is the God of change, luck, freedom, hope, and justice. Five separate realms embodied by the five points of a purple star. The star is emblazoned on the side of a cauldron, heated by the flames of change & ingenuity. Priests of the Hidden Cauldron toss five different tokens of worship into their holy cauldrons. To ask for change, they mix in the blood of a lamb. To ask for luck, they throw in a platinum coin. To ask for freedom, they throw in a pair of broken manacles. To ask for hope, they throw in a lock of their own hair. To ask for justice, they write down their grievances and burn the paper in the boiling stew.

What is Sacred? What is Profane?
Preachers of the Church of Nelson see not things in the light of Sacred or Profane. They have hope in the balanced neutrality of things, and believe that there must be light and dark, and work to sustain that balance. Justice is achieved by following the signs that Our Lord Dagger gives or whispers in the echoing bubbles of the black cauldron. Freedom is freedom from restrictions. Change cannot happen in a stagnant society. Whether change comes from breaking a lock, physically, or metaphorically, or by the luck of the toss - Worshipers of Lord Nelson know that luck comes to those who work towards change, but change must not upset the balance of the universe. Therefore they change things that upset this balance, and through that they find freedom and walk in the holy mists of Nelson, the Bubbling One. There is however, an ongoing feud in the Deity plane between Nelson and Brand, and therefore this translates to church tensions in the physical plane.

What weapons or implement is held in high regard?
Daggers, because they are unseen as is the balance of the world. Most see things in one extreme or the other. Large weapons are here, magic is there. Daggers are in the middle, and are balanced at the hilt. They fit into your girdle, which is wrapped around your middle. Belts therefore are held in high regard, and priests of Nelson are known to craft the most elaborate and well-fitted belts for adventurers. Spoons are held in high regard because they mix the relics into the cauldrons of change. A spoon is another symbol for Nelson, and in regions where his worship is outlawed, a spoon above a tavern’s back door may be a beacon to those seeking his forbidden guidance.

Who are your chosen people?
Creatures of Neutral Alignment. Genies. Lycanthropes. Short folk, mostly Halflings, though some Dwarves and even a scattering of Sprites. Potion-Makers. Apothecarians. Thieves. Locksmiths. Pyromaniacs. Astronomers.

What number is a sacred number?
Nelson’s sacred number is 5. The five points of the star. The five ingredients in the cauldron.

What other forms, aside from humanoid, does your god take when descending upon mortals?
Nelson rarely takes humanoid form when descending upon mortals. Instead he speaks to them in mysterious echoes from the bubbles of the cauldron. One bubble may pop and say “listen” and the next may pop and say “do my bidding”. Therefore worship of Nelson is done entirely around the Cauldron. Thieves and Pyros and Werewolves meet at their local Potion Brewer, who is usually the church-head in the town. They stand over the cauldron and chant, hoping to be graced by Spooniosis.

What other names is your god known by?
The Bubbling One, Our Lord Dagger; and only at the highest levels of worship, Spooniosis.
